TONGAAT HULETT

Catalyx, as a key implementing partner since 2015 for Tongaat Hulett Development programmes implements their Socio-Economic Sustainability and Innovation Programme (SSIP). The focus of THD projects is to empower and link people from marginalized communities in or near Tongaat Hulett’s landholdings with various skills training, employment and enterprise development opportunities. There are about 15 communities participating in THD programmes in the Greater Umhlanga, Greater Tongaat, KwaDukuza, Shongweni and Bridge City areas.

Catalyx manages and implements various projects including:

Social census of the identified communities and the development of an online database containing data of each household; small businesses and training undertaken. The online database currently has records of almost 35 000 people from these marginalized communities.

ITHUBA COMMUNITY CENTRES

Management of the iThuba community centers and through these centers, coordinating social development activities such as:

Identifying skills shortages and linking community members with skills training.
Employment opportunity identification and work placement facilitation. Catalyx has facilitated work readiness training for 1 000’s of unemployed youth from these communities and many of them have been placed into employment.
Enterprise Development – mentorship and support of informal traders and micro enterprises based in the target communities. Linking these small businesses to development projects for contracting work. Developing small businesses in farming and technical skills such as plumbing, electrical and building.
