The Afro’s Chicken franchise in The Pavilion Shopping Centre is part of the Catalyx group and is led by Nontobeko Nzama, the majority owner.

Afro’s is a proudly local chicken shop that believes in serving fresh, uncomplicated food made well with the best ingredients. Nearly all the 10 employees were trained through Mr Price Foundation’s JumpStart programme, a project implemented by Catalyx.

Nontobeko (Nonto) is a young entrepreneur, who has spent most of her career in the hospitality sector at junior and management levels. She has also worked as a cleaner, an electrician’s assistant, a promoter and a model. She hails from humble beginnings in KwaNgcolosi in the Valley of 1000 Hills and was proud to have built her own home when she was only 23 years old through hard work and perseverance. 10 years later, she fulfilled her dream of entrepreneurship by opening her first restaurant, Afro’s Chicken at The Pavilion Shopping Centre, in Durban, in partnership with Joe White and Catalyx.

She believes that “You should leave footprints of kindness where ever you go. Rainbows will follow.”
